We started a compost pile at school using the same guidelines that I did for my compost pile at home. However, as usual the wonderful staff at Incarnation Catholic School helped to make it better and more secure than I asked for. They came up with a solid wood frame with the chicken wire attached to it. When I stopped at school to check on the progress of the garden during the Thanksgiving holiday, I discovered that someone has donated 4 more bales of hay. The students will be delighted. They thought layering hay with composted cow manure was a terrific way to spend a recess and they loved tossing in the coffee grounds, egg shells, etc. that they brought from home. Now we’ll get to start another compost pile. They are beginning to understand what it means to be a steward of the earth – one compost pile at a time.
