About The Author

Kaizen is a Japanese concept meaning to actively work towards continuous improvement.

I am settling in Tampa and learning to manage a Florida-friendly garden. We have planted fruit trees, started a vegetable garden, and added flowers and shrubs for the butterflies and for our enjoyment. Much more importantly, I am teaching science and technology at a nearby Catholic school. Our team of science teachers is working with students to develop and maintain a garden at the school. Our theme for the year is “Catholics going Green” with the garden at the heart of the theme.

TheĀ Hillsborough County extension office and the University of Florida website are my main “official” resources. Meme, and her Hoe and Shovel blog, is my garden inspiration.

I have worked in international schools in Japan, Jordan, Singapore, Indonesia, the Philippines, and I was a Peace Corps Volunteer in Malaysia eons ago. I have a B.S. in biology and an M.S. in botany (mycology) from Iowa State University and have taught botany, zoology, biology (IB & AP), general science, earth science, computer science (IB & AP), and technology/information literacy (preK-12).

  1. Thank you for your information on Lubber Grasshoppers.
I have been fighting these things since the Hurricanes of 2004. I live in New Port Richey, Fl, and as such was glad to see you are in my same area of the country. I believe they blew in with the winds from the storms of 04 (since I had not had them prior to that time). I also believe maybe I did not have them before because I used to have my yard sprayed for fleas twice a year I am debating whether to go back to that! I have shrubs around my whole yard which makes fighting these little buggers so hard! The yards on either side of me also have them so I am sort of at a loss. But will keep fighting! thanks again, Terri

    • Those lubbers – they are back again, aren’t they! I found one sitting on my front door today. The nerve. He (she?) didn’t last long though. I am reluctant to use chemical sprays on my garden, but I did when I saw the clusters of young lubbers earlier this year. Now I just cut them in half.
